At the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, poetic and musical texts were created that often asked: What is man? What is human life? What is the world? The answers expressed the vanity of the world and the insignificance of human existence, filled with vivid imagery and metaphors. We present another of the 31 fugues by the Cistercian monk Mauritius Vogt, from his collection Vertumnus Vanitatis musice in XXXI Fugis delusus – musical jests on the vanity of life: „…time runs like the wind… where is the beauty of youth? Where have the wonders of the world gone?“
The vanity of the game and the past. An architectural fugue of dice. The dice fall against us; just as straw is blown away by the wind, so the beauty of youth fades. Time runs like the wind. Where have the wonders of the world gone? Where Pergamon once stood, ears of grain now sway and a vast desert stretches out.
