Learning about Zelenka’s brilliant music arouses enthusiasm and excitement. It brings impulses and new themes to old music. His work as a whole has an extraordinary quality and impresses listeners and us performers with its compositional artistry, inventiveness and unusually strong emotional charge. What Bach achieved in the Protestant field, Zelenka has created and completed in the Catholic field. This is a highly original synthesis of compositional techniques and styles of the 17th and first half of the 18th century. For me Zelenka is the most important composer of the Baroque period. I identify with his original musical ideas, which speak to me in a language I can understand. From this understanding, I also form an idea of Zelenka’s personality and I believe that he was a highly educated man with a noble character and a peculiar and sympathetic sense of humour. The most valuable value of Zelenka’s work is his ability to bear witness to another and higher dimension. Zelenka’s contemporary, the Dresden court poet Johann Gottlob Kittel, aptly put it when he wrote that thanks to Zelenka’s music we can already taste the joy of heaven here on earth.
